Vintage Jean Varon Dress
A vintage 1970s gown by leading designer Jean Varon, with cherry print by Celia Birtwell.
John Bates, with no formal training started the Jean Varon label in 1960. He called it Jean Varon because he felt at that time you had to appear to be French. Bates is also credited with the invention of the mini skirt. In the late 1960s and 1970s Bates continued to innovate, and the clothes adopted a more feminine look. Sadly they fizzled out in the 1970s/ early 1980s, but the Jean Varon label continued into the 1980s.
